Motorcycle officer injured in crash

NEWPORT BEACH – A Newport Beach police officer was injured when his motorcycle collided with a car Monday morning, police said.

The accident occurred at Newport Hills Drive and Ford Road, and was called in by the injured officer at 11:13 a.m., said Lt. Bill Hartford of the Newport Beach police.

It appears that the driver of an Oldsmobile Cutlass made a left turn in front of the officer, who suffered leg and facial injuries and was taken by ambulance to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Hartford said.

"The officer is going to be hurting for a while but he will be OK," he said.

The male driver of the Cutlass was walking around and appeared unhurt.

The accident is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, Hartford said.

CHP was notified of the crash at 11:35 a.m., said CHP officer Denise Quesada.

CHP officers are often called to investigate crashes involving other police agencies.
